Trauma counselling in Bromley and online
Something difficult may be over, while its effects still feel present. You might feel on edge, disconnected or overwhelmed by reminders you weren’t expecting. Perhaps you struggle to trust yourself or other people, even when part of you knows you are in a different situation now.
At Untangled Therapy, you can ask about counselling for the effects of difficult and traumatic experiences in Bromley or online. We welcome enquiries from Beckenham, Bickley, Chislehurst and nearby areas. We will discuss your needs and the appropriate counsellor before agreeing to work together.
You don’t have to prove what happened was serious enough
Difficult experiences can include a frightening event, abuse, a medical experience or repeated situations in which you felt unsafe or powerless. The way an experience affects you can depend on many things, including what support you had at the time.
You might minimise what happened because someone else experienced something different or because you kept functioning afterwards. You may not use the word trauma yourself. What matters in the first conversation is what you are experiencing now and what sort of support would help.
You can also have mixed feelings about the people involved. Loving someone, missing them or feeling loyalty doesn’t mean that what hurt you must be ignored. Counselling can make room for complexity without requiring a simple story.
Safety, choice and pace
Talking about distressing experiences needs care. You won’t be expected to give a detailed account during an introductory call, and disclosing everything quickly isn’t a measure of progress. Your counsellor can explain their way of working and discuss what feels manageable.
We can begin with what helps you feel more settled in the present, what makes daily life difficult and what you need from the therapeutic relationship. You can ask for a pause, say you don’t want to answer a question or revisit something later.
A trauma-informed approach pays attention to the effects of difficult experiences and to your sense of control in sessions. It doesn’t mean that every counsellor offers every trauma treatment. We will be clear about the work available and discuss other services if your needs call for more specialised support.
What counselling may focus on
Depending on your circumstances and your counsellor’s training, you might explore shame, self-blame, boundaries, relationships or the ways you learned to cope. You may want to understand why certain situations feel threatening or why you switch between intense feelings and feeling very little.
There may be space for practical ways to orient yourself to the present, alongside careful exploration of what happened and what it means to you. The focus should be agreed together rather than imposed. We will review whether the sessions feel appropriate and useful.
Counselling here isn’t presented as a guaranteed cure or a substitute for every form of specialist care. If you need an assessment, a particular treatment or coordinated support, we can discuss the limits of our service openly.

Questions you might have
Will I have to retell everything?
No detailed account is required to make an enquiry. In sessions, you and your counsellor can discuss what to explore, when and how.
Do you offer EMDR or specialist PTSD treatment?
Ask us about the specific treatment you need. This page doesn’t advertise EMDR, diagnostic assessment or a specialist PTSD programme.
What if I don’t know whether it was trauma?
You can describe the effects you are noticing without choosing a label. We can then discuss whether counselling with us is suitable.
